Why I'm Supporting the Heart & Stroke Foundation

Why I'm Supporting the Heart & Stroke Foundation

In November 2009, at the age of 39, I was playing in my regular men's league hockey game—a routine I had followed for years. Despite maintaining a rigorous fitness regimen, including working out five days a week and a background in competitive bodybuilding, that evening took an unexpected turn. Without any prior warning signs, I suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the ice.

The immediate response from my teammates, who performed CPR, and the timely use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) were crucial in saving my life. I was rushed to St. Boniface Hospital, where I underwent emergency procedures and was later fitted with an internal cardiac defibrillator to monitor and regulate my heart rhythm.

This experience was a profound wake-up call. I had always considered myself healthy and invincible, but heart disease does not discriminate. The incident compelled me to reevaluate my lifestyle and priorities, placing a newfound emphasis on heart health and the importance of emergency preparedness.

In the years since, I've become an advocate for heart health awareness, sharing my story to highlight the critical importance of CPR training and the availability of AEDs in public spaces. It's a mission close to my heart, as I know firsthand that these tools and skills can mean the difference between life and death.

This year, I am deeply honoured to be recognized as the 2025 honouree for the Ironman Outdoor Curling Bonspiel. This event not only celebrates the spirit of curling but also serves as a significant fundraiser for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. The funds raised support life-saving research, education, and community programs aimed at preventing heart disease and stroke.

I am joining forces with The Deal Closers, a dedicated team participating in the bonspiel, to raise awareness and funds for this vital cause. Our collective goal is to honor those affected by heart disease and to contribute to a future where such incidents are less common.
